After 3.5 years of extensive research, the CIRCULAR FoodPack project has been successfully completed! Our innovative sorting and recycling technologies have demonstrated how flexible food packaging can become truly circular. Based on our key findings, we now present policy recommendations to drive the transition toward sustainable packaging solutions.
These are the Key Takeaways from our Policy Brief:
Achieved: Over 99% sorting accuracy with Tracer-Based-Sorting, enabling a closed-loop system for flexible food packaging waste
Demonstrated: Pathways for the safe integration of recycled polyethylene (PE PCR) into food packaging
Proven: Recycling flexible packaging can reduce CO₂ emissions by up to five times compared to incineration
Recommended: Clear regulatory support to enhance recycling infrastructure and boost the uptake of high-quality post-consumer recyclates
To make circular food packaging a reality, we need ambitious policies, investments in recycling infrastructure, and industry-wide collaboration.
