CIRCULAR FoodPack – Circular packaging for direct food contact applications

Dear {profile_1} ,

The CIRCULAR FoodPack project was very busy in the last few months. Get the latest news on CIRCULAR FoodPack in this edition of our newsletter: see our new project video and read about our last General Assembly, our first webinar on sorting technologies, our activities within the Circular Plastics Cluster, and much more!

And don’t forget to follow us on Twitter and LinkedIn!

Project video finished!

We are delighted to share our brand-new CIRCULAR FoodPack project video with you! See the video here.
The video highlights the approach and objectives of our EU project in an easily understandable way. You can find out how we reduce the consumption of primary resources, create awareness for the issue and increase the acceptance of recycled products.

Save-the-date: Conference "Circularity for Food Packaging"

Don’t miss out our one-day conference "Circularity for Food Packaging" on 23 November 2023 at Fraunhofer IVV’s premises in Freising, Germany.

Stakeholders from the recycling industry, waste managers, brand owners/producers, policymakers and scientists will be invited for exchanges on the latest developments in the field of circular packaging.

More information can be found here! Registration opens soon.

Webinar: Innovative sorting for plastic packaging waste

On 29 June, CIRCULAR FoodPack held its first public webinar on "Innovative sorting for plastic packaging waste: Tracer-Based-Sorting and digital watermarking, in conjunction with NIR sorters" and reached more than 60 participants.

In close collaboration with the EU-funded project CIMPA, we demonstrated the characteristics of the Tracer-Based-Sorting and the digital watermarking and underlined the role of efficient sorting technologies for more circularity in plastic packaging.

General Assembly in Siegburg, Germany

Our CIRCULAR FoodPack consortium had the opportunity to come together again at our bi-annual General Assembly Meeting. This time, the meeting took place at our project partner SIEGWERK’s premises in Siegburg, Germany, from 9-10 May 2023.

On two very fruitful days, the project members discussed the work progress in the project and aligned on future activities.

Our special thanks go to SIEGWERK for being a great host and giving us a tour of their headquarters in Siegburg!

CIRCULAR FoodPack at the Plastics Recycling World Expo

CIRCULAR FoodPack attended the Plastics Recycling World Expo in Essen, Germany, from 14-15 June 2023 together with five other EU-funded projects from the Circular Plastics Cluster.

The cluster’s booth at the exposition in Essen was one of its first joint dissemination activities. Every project had the opportunity to give insights into the ongoing and upcoming project activities and to inform about the achieved project results. Together, they underlined the necessity to boost the circularity of plastics in all its dimensions.

Circular Plastics Cluster: EU projects join forces to boost circular plastics!

The Circular Plastics Cluster is a joint activity of seven EU-funded projects aiming at making plastics more circular. The participating projects are CIRCULAR FoodPack, CIMPA, MERLIN, REMADYL, SOL-REC2, BUDDIE PACK and R3PACK.

Their common objective is to boost the collection, sorting, cleaning, reuse, recycling, and manufacturing of plastic products, including complex and multilayer materials. As such, the cluster projects aim to cover the whole value chain in order to create a fully safe and sustainable circular model for plastic packaging waste.

New scientific publication

The second scientific publication within the CIRCULAR FoodPack project was published in May 2023. The article "Understanding the Complexity of Deinking Plastic Waste : An Assessment of the Efficiency of Different Treatments to Remove Ink Resins from Printed Plastic Film" by Ügdüler, S., et al. appeared in the JOURNAL OF HAZARDOUS MATERIALS, vol. 452, 2023.

Project collaboration activities

Joint activities are an integral part of our CIRCULAR FoodPack project as joining forces is essential for achieving a circular economy.

CIRCULAR FoodPack and CIMPA have recently started a closer cooperation by participating in the Circular Plastics Cluster and by co-organizing the webinar on innovative sorting technologies.

CIMPA is a H2020 project that works on innovative solutions for the sorting, separation, recycling and manufacturing of multilayer materials. The project’s aim is to develop a recycling value chain for multilayer plastics. CIRCULAR FoodPack and CIMPA are working on further collaboration activities – stay tuned!

Check out the CIMPA project video here.

We wish you a pleasant summer and relaxing holidays!

Kind regards,
Your CIRCULAR FoodPack Dissemination & Communication Team
